The Calvert-FSK Scholars are "On Par"

The Calvert-FSK Scholars took a field trip to a golf training center. Everyone had a blast competing against their friends.

"It was super fun, we went to the Lake Clifton, and I play golf a lot so it was fun. Golf is for everyone, no lie", said Xavier when asked about his golf experience. "We went into the mansion too, and it was pretty awesome," Xavier told us as he reflected about the rest of the day. Overall, everyone had a great time developing their golf skills!

Calvert-FSK Scholars Tie-Dye Shirts

The Calvert-FSK Scholars tie-dyed their camp T-shirts throughout this week. We made many different, colorful designs using various techniques such as the swirl technique and the bulls-eye technique. When we dyed the shirts, many people's hands, shoes, feet, and clothes became coated in the dye, but everybody still had a great time tie-dying their shirts. The Calvert-FSK Scholars will wear these new, intensely vibrant shirts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Hershey Park.

Electives: Ceramics

The Calvert-FSK Scholars Ceramic elective class has been hard at work during this summer program. The students are making various creations from clay that are inspired by different artifacts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They are creating everything from a vase to toucan, and one "student" made a hieroglyphic lion! This group has really made wonders out of clay.

The Calvert-FSK Scholars Visit to the Reginald F. Lewis Museum

The Calvert-FSK Scholars 8th and 9th Graders visited the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture. We had a great time and learned about many Maryland African Americans such as Benjamin Banneker, Thurgood Marshall, Ben Carson, Frederick Douglass, and Fanny Jackson Coppin. During the tour, the Calvert-FSK Scholars also learned about some of the rough tasks African Americans were forced to do like catching oysters for 14 hours a day and growing and harvesting tobacco.

The Calvert-FSK Scholars put their new found knowledge to the test by competing to see who could write the most persuasive letter or flyer to get the state to build a statue of a Maryland African American. Jasmine won first place, Makayla placed in second, and Devonte came in third. This trip greatly expanded the cultural knowledge of the Calvert-FSK 8th and 9th Graders.

The Calvert-FSK Scholars Set Sail

The Calvert-FSK Scholars went sailing and had a blast! We sailed around the harbor and learned many amazing, useful things to use when sailing. We learned the anatomy of a boat. For example, the main sail and the jib sail are used to steer the boat when oars are not being used. Since the temperature was about 100 degrees, after sailing the campers had a water balloon fight. Once we finished, we had a cookout with delicious sausages, hot dogs, hamburgers, and chips. Despite the heat, we still had a great time!

Calvert-FSK Scholars Visit the Hippodrome

The Calvert-FSK Scholars went to the Hippodrome to put ourselves in the shoes of actors before a show. We did some of the exercises and stretches the actors need to do to get loose before a performance. We also did some singing exercises and put different emotions into various dialogues to change the meaning of what we were saying. Finally, we got to paint our faces like an actor would in a play like The Lion King. The Calvert-FSK Scholars became the Calvert-FSK Artists! There was a great range of designs people made. There were lions, mimes, and even a person with multiple eyes! This trip was a great way for the Calvert-FSK Scholars to learn about the business of acting in plays, and they had a great time learning about it.

Ben Carson Tells the Calvert-FSK Scholars to "Think Big"

The Calvert-FSK Scholars saw Ben Carson, the world renowned brain surgeon, speak at Johns Hopkins medical campus. He delivered a very powerful message to the attendees by telling us about how he got to where he is today, and he even told us about some of the brain surgeries he has performed.

His journey to get to the top is an uplifting story that is also featured in his autobiography, Gifted Hands. He was at the bottom of his class until his mother inspired him to work harder, and he eventually climbed to the top of his class. He did so well that he ended up attending Yale for college to get a medical degree. He finished his medical courses after 11 hard years.

His life story showed the Calvert-FSK Scholars that with hard work, anything can be accomplished. He told us that when you fulfill your potential, you can become anything you want to be. Attending this event was a great experience, and the Calvert-FSK Scholars benefited greatly from it.
